  • 1½ cups ketchup
  • 1 small can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
  • ½ cup lightly packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup red wine vinegar or cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons regular or reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon finely minced fresh ginger or bottled minced ginger
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dry mustard or prepared Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes, or more to taste (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice (optional)
  1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir to mix well. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes to blend the flavors. Remove the sauce from the heat. The sauce will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
