Pies in a Jar Recipe

  • One double recipe pastry pie crust
  • 1/2 pint wide-mouth canning jars
  • One recipe using your favorite fruit filling (if using apple, chop apples into small pieces)
  • Sanding sugar, optional
  1. TO PREPARE
  2. Wash and dry jars before using. Roll out pie dough
  3. slightly thinner than you would for a regular pie.
  4. Cut into pieces and press into jars three-fourths of
  5. the way up the sides of the jar. Spoon in pie filling
  6. until the jar is three-fourths full. Use a canning jar
  7. lid as a template for the diameter of the top crust.
  8. Make decorative cut-outs using tiny cookie cutters,
  9. if desired. Place the dough circles over jars, gently
  10. pressing dough in the center and on the sides. Add
  11. cut-out dough pieces. Sprinkle with sanding sugar if
  12. desired. Pies may be frozen with lids on for later use.
  13. FOR FRESH BAKING
  14. Place jars on baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 45
  15. minutes. Cover jars loosely with aluminum foil if
  16. the tops brown too quickly. You want to be sure the
  17. bottom crust bakes thoroughly. Allow jars to cool to
  18. the touch before serving.
  19. TO BAKE FROM FROZEN
  20. Place frozen jars on baking sheet. Remove lids. Bake
  21. at 350°F for 1 hour. Allow jars to cool to the touch
  22. before serving.
