Oh-So-Sloppy Joes Recipe
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 3/4 cup diced red onion
- 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
- 1/2 cup sliced carrots
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 pound lean ground beef round
- 1/2 cup reduced-sodium tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
- 4 sesame seed burger buns
- Warm the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, green peppers, carrots, celery, garlic, and oregano; cook for 4 or 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened. Add the ground beef. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, for 3 minutes, or until no longer pink. Stir in the tomato sauce, water, and vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, black pepper, and hot-pepper sauce. Cook for 3 minutes, or until heated through.
- Lightly toast the buns. Place 1/2 cup (125 ml) of the mixture on the bottom half of each bun. Top with the other half.
